Apparently, the last meal has been served at Genessee Depot.
The Lakeview restaurant, which had served what Metromix called 'traditional American fare with an Eastern European twist in a casual dining atmosphere' since 1973, has been shut down and its owner/chef, Dennis Zull, has been evicted.
The issue involved money. According to Mitchell Asher, the attorney representing Kenard Management ( which owned the property ) , his client was owed $38,319 in rent. Asher added that the monthly rent was $1,700, 'which is below market value.' Moreover, the lawyer noted that in 1999 his client forgave a debt of nearly $32,000.
Herman Marino, who represented the restaurant and the owner, initially claimed to not know about Genessee Depot. However, when Windy City Times informed him that it had copies of court records naming him as Zull and the Depot's attorney, he declined to speak any further. A call to Zull's residence was not immediately returned.
Genessee Depot was at 3736 N. Broadway.
