Local pro-LGBT spiritual organization Sankofa Way has dissolved, citing money-related difficulties.
In an e-mail to members and supporters, Treasurer Jonetta Choi said, "We just do not have the financial [ wherewithal ] any longer to remain true to our commitment to provide space for all to learn, grow, and challenge regardless of their ability to pay." Executive Director The Rev. Deborah Lake added, "A decline in donations and rise in unemployment has caused a great toll on the organization. It's unfortunate, but Sankofa Way can no longer continue."
During its six years of existence, Sankofa Way was instrumental in fighting instances of homophobia, including taking part in picketing events such as the concerts of anti-gay reggae singer Buju Banton. The group also led talks dealing with subjects like misogyny, homophobia and racism.
Board Chair Kizzy Buchmelter said, "I'm proud of the work that we did in the community, and I'm happy that I had the opportunity to serve as a founding [ board member ] ."
Sankofa Way has been honored by such groups as Grassroots.org . Volunteer Will Lockett was named one of Windy City Times' 30 Under 30 in 2007. |
