—"Ain't No Son" by Court Yard Hounds: This country song by two-thirds of the Dixie Chicks is a foot-stomper about a conservative father turning away his gay son, told from dad's point of view ( "You know this ain't no fun for me/ This ain't no fun for me/ All boys should be boys/ That's how it should be" ) . It's one of the saddest uptempo songs since Pet Shop Boys' "Being Boring."

—The Chicago restaurant erwin: Located at 2925 N. Halsted, this eatery/bar is lovely and affordable. The snappy contemporary American fare features items ranging from the classic burger to sauteed skate. Moreover, a "New Deal" three-course $18 special includes soup or salad; entree; and dessert.

—Wear Your Music guitar-string bracelets: Go to WearYourMusic.org and contribute to the organization's guitar-string project. You can choose from artist bracelets ( made from strings donated by musicians including Ani DiFranco, Joan Jett, Jason Mraz and Peter Frampton ) or fashion items ( which, despite the category name, begin at $7 ) .

—Grab Them Aghast: This comedy album—taped from a live show by local lesbian Cameron Esposito—features segments with such titles as "Wha-a-Mole," "Team Dating" and "For the Best Time, Call Cameron." From a comedic standpoint, the last is certainly true.

—GoodFoodNearYou iPhone app: Perfect for travelers, this app recommends healthful food choices ( employed by GPS ) depending on where you are. It surveys everything from casual restaurants to grocery stores. Tap one of the suggestions and get healthful menu items, complete with listings of calories as well as carb and fat grams.
