Tracy Baim, publisher for Windy City Media Group and winner of a 2005 Studs Terkel Media Award, will talk about the changing media landscape in her keynote address, 'Why Alternative is the New Mainstream,' on Jan. 31 at the 14th Annual Meeting of the Association for Women Journalists ( AWJ ) -Chicago. The event, which also includes the presentation of AWJ-Chicago's annual scholarships to outstanding journalism students and the election of its 2007 board of directors, will run 5:30-8 p.m. at the studios of CBS-2 WBBM, 630 N. McClurg.
As publisher of Windy City Media Group, Baim oversees publishing of Chicago's oldest weekly LGBT newspaper, Windy City Times, as well as Nightspots, Windy City Queercast and online media. Besides the Terkel Award, Baim has been honored by numerous journalism and community groups, including Crain's Chicago Business, the Human Rights Campaign, the Gay and Lesbian Hall of Fame and the National Gay and Lesbian Journalists Association. She co-founded Windy City Times in 1985, and has served on numerous community boards, including as founder of the Chicago Area Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce and the co-vice chair of Gay Games VII.
