The Association of Latino/as Motivating Action ( ALMA ), in collaboration with the Chicago LGBTQ Immigrant Rights Coalition, is hosting a "DACA Renewal" Informational Session on Aug. 12, 4 p.m. - 6 p.m., in the Back of the Yards neighborhood.
In June 2012, after a lot of pressure from immigrant youth activists, President Obama issued an executive order that provides young undocumented immigrants, who meet certain requirements, temporary relief from deportation. Under the guidelines established by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services ( USCIS ), DACA recipients must renew their status every two years in order to continue to have valid work authorization.
The Informational Session will go over the DACA renewal process. Lawyers from the LGBTQ Immigrant Rights Coalition, and representatives from the Hispanic Lawyers Association of Illinois ( HLAI ), and the National Immigrant Justice Center ( NIJC ) will also be able to answer any questions or concerns attendees may have.
The event is open to everyone, including individuals who currently have DACA, think they may be or are eligible for DACA or DACA renewal, family members, and community members who would like to learn more about DACA.
This will be a safe space, and LGBTQ undocumented youth are highly encouraged to attend.
