SANDRA DAY O'CONNOR HONORED AT BAR ASSOCIATION LUNCHEON
CHICAGO, ILL. ( April 21, 2010 ) -- United States Supreme Court Justice ( retired ) Sandra Day O'Connorwill be the guest of honor at a reception and luncheon hosted by The Chicago Bar Association at noon, Wednesday, May 19 at the Chicago Hilton, 720 S. Michigan Ave. The reception will be in the Normandie room and the luncheon will follow in the Grand Ballroom.
A legal pioneer, Justice O'Connor has been a "first" many times in her career. Ronald Reagan appointed her the first woman to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court in 1981. Her 24 years on the Court earned her the reputation as a moderate voice and the frequent "swing vote" in decisions.
As a lawyer, she was elected to two terms as a state senator in her native Arizona, and was the first woman in the United States to be elected the majority leader of a state senate body. She was elected a judge in Arizona before ascending to the high court.
