The National Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Bar Association, the nation's only association of LGBT legal professionals, judges and law students, has selected Christian Dowell, Legal Director, Global Brand Protection at Yahoo! Inc., as a recipient of the organization's Out & Proud Corporate Counsel Award. Throughout the year, the LGBT Bar recognizes LGBT corporate attorneys for their contributions to equality in the legal profession.
"Christian Dowell is a respected leader in the legal profession and in the LGBT community," said D'Arcy Kemnitz, executive director of the National LGBT Bar Association. "His leadership at Yahoo! in addition to his work on behalf of our LGBT young people is an example to future leaders in the movement for equality. He is truly an inspiration to all legal practitioners selflessly dedicated to social justice."
At Yahoo! Inc., Dowell is responsible for managing a heavy docket of U.S. and foreign litigation, as well as focusing on Yahoo!'s anti-phishing and anti-spam efforts. He also serves on the Board of Directors for The Trevor Project, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to preventing youth suicide among the LGBT community.
Christian has done a remarkable job addressing and strengthening diversity awareness at Yahoo! as well as in the community. Yahoo!, a leader in diversity best practices, promotes LGBT diversity with Yahoo! Pride, a focus group catering to its inner LGBT workforce as well as supporting community events, like the San Francisco International Gay & Lesbian Film Festival, and missions, such as their own anti-homophobic bullying campaign.
The Out & Proud Corporate Counsel Award will be presented on June 16, 2011, at a reception at Slide Lounge in San Francisco, California. For more information about the event, please visit LGBTbar.org .
The National LGBT Bar Association is a national association of lawyers, judges and other legal professionals, law students, activists, and affiliated lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender legal organizations. The association promotes justice in and through the legal profession for the LGBT community in all its diversity.
