Each year, the Ms. Foundation honors the remarkable achievements of trailblazing women activists and their supporters whose courage and leadership ignite change on behalf of women and communities across the country. As Women of Vision they move us closer toward the realization of our shared vision: a nation in which power and possibility are not limited by gender, race, class, or any other factor.
The 2011 Woman of Vision and Action Awardee is:
Loreen Arbus, President, The Loreen Arbus Foundation (Los Angeles, CA): The Ms. Foundation is pleased to recognize Loreen Arbus as its Woman of Vision and Action. Loreen is a leading national advocate for people with disabilities, who supports and focuses her philanthropy on women, minorities, medical research, the arts and global peace. Loreen is the first woman in the US to head up programming for a national television network; once for Showtime and again for Cable Health Network/ Lifetime. She is recognized for her humanitarian and professional accomplishments and serves on 13 non-profit boards.
Selected from among the Ms. Foundation's grantees, the 2011 Women of Vision Awardees are:
Attica Woodson Scott, Coordinator, Kentucky Jobs with Justice (Louisville, KY): With Attica at the helm, Kentucky Jobs with Justice has evolved into a broad-based coalition of community groups, faith-based organizations and labor unions united to promote, protect and improve the quality of life for all workers. In early 2011, they used collective action and other creative tactics to help defeat a racist, anti-immigrant bill modeled after the one Arizona passed last year.
Kathy Miller, President, Texas Freedom Network (Austin, TX): Founded in 1995, Texas Freedom Network is a nonpartisan, grassroots organization that monitors far-right organizations, money and leaders in Texas. Under Kathy's leadership, they've made critical progress in the struggle to bring comprehensive sexual health education to schools in one of the most conservative states in the nation.
Priscilla Rorie, Youth Coordinator, Close to Home (Dorchester, MA): Close to Home (CTH) provides leadership opportunities and fosters community-wide responsibility to prevent and intervene in domestic and sexual violence. Through her work with CTH, Priscilla has inspired dozens of youth in her community to speak out, share their stories, and break the vicious cycle of silence and shame that can lead to further violence.
