The Chicago Gay and Lesbian Hall of Famer selections have been made for 1999. The awards are administered by the city's Advisory Council on Gay and Lesbian Issues, and they are the only governmentsponsored Hall of Fame in the U.S.
The gay and lesbian individuals selected for 1999 are: Ava Allen (owner of Lost & Found); John Ballester (active in many groups, including the Advisory Council on Gay and Lesbian Issues); Derrick Hicks (with several gay and health groups, including Greater Chicago Committee), Billie Jean King (tennis legend); Lorraine Hansberry (playwright, best known for A Raisin' In The Sun); David Brian Bell (posthumous; he was an aggressive AIDS activist 1985 89); Norman Sandfield (active on gay Jewish issues); Phill Wilson (Black gay and AIDS activist, raised in Chicago, now living in California); Randy Duncan (dancer and choreographer); Rick Garcia (political director of the Illinois Federation for Human Rights); and Gregg Shapiro (activist and writer, including for Outlines/ Nightlines).
Friends of the community: Secretary of State Jesse White and Adrene "Big Red" Perom (who, especially in the 1980s, helped raise a lot of money for AIDS and gay causes at her club, Big Red's).
Organization: Lesbian Community Cancer Project.
The previous inductees into the Hall of Fame make decisions on new recipients of the honor. The awards will be Oct. 26, 5:30 p.m. at the Cultural Center.
