Iconic German fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld—who was the fashion visionary and creative director of Chanel—has died at age 85, CNN.com related.

Lagerfeld, who started leading Chanel in 1983, was typically seen with his dark glasses, a ponytail and fingerless gloves. Born in Hamburg, Germany, Lagerfeld won a womenswear design competition in 1954—which started him on his road to becoming a leading figure in fashion.

Tributes poured in on social media. Donatella Versace posted a photo of Lagerfeld and herself on Instagram, with the caption "Karl your genius touched the lives of so many, especially Gianni and I. We will never forget your incredible talent and endless inspiration. We were always learning from you." British Vogue Editor-in-Chief Edward Enninful called Lagerfeld "one of the greatest designers in the history of fashion."

Chicago fashion designer Borris J. Powell posted on Facebook, "What a loss for the [fashion] industry. You my dear gave so much of you to all of us. You will forever be missed. And thank you for all of your inspiration. RIP you creative genius. KL"
