CHICAGO ( January 11, 2018 ) — Center on Halsted is proud to announce the Center will be hosting a series of Black History Month events in February. The At the Intersections series will kick-off on Thursday, February 1 with Quiet Storm: The Art & Times of Black LGBTQ Life. The event is a showcase of Black LGBTQ life through artistic expression. Visual and performance artists who will be sharing their work include:
- Darryl Terrell, queer African-American photographer
- Dr. Johari Jabir, musician and Associate Professor of African-American Studies at UIC
- e. nina jay, spoken word poet
- Gerber Hart Library, a traveling exhibition of Black LGBTQ periodicals
"Center on Halsted welcomes everyone to celebrate Black History Month with programs that highlight the diversity within LGBTQ Black history and Black culture," says Modesto Tico Valle, CEO, Center on Halsted. He adds, "We are honored that Pride Action Tank, Equality Illinois, and DuSable Museum of African-American History, have joined us as sponsors for our Black History Month series. Bringing community together to gain insight on Black History through art, and the resulting conversations, will inspire all of us to take more action for equality."

Black culture shapes the City of Chicago and Black LGBTQ are undeniably a part of that narrative. Experiencing the perspectives of Black life through the artists in our series is more important for our community now than it has ever been before."
