The Top Ten Reasons to Sign Up for Gay Games
10 ) It's here in Chicago. No travel time. No commuting. It's right here in our own backyard. Did I mention it's an international event? I just love a woman with an English accent.
9 ) Lockerrooms. Always a favorite hangout spot for those competing and not. A little restroom break to check out the competition can't hurt.
8 ) Support your friends. Be a spectator in the women's wrestling. I can't think of a better way to spend the afternoon.
7 ) Nightly festivities. It's a great excuse to get out on a beautiful summer night in Chicago and see the best of our local LGBT talent in music, comedy, theatre, and other cultural events.
6 ) Do your sport. Bowling, darts, badminton. You don't have to be a superstar at them. The idea is to come together 'in the spirit of Participation, Inclusion and Personal Best.'
5 ) Make new friends. Lots of them. There will be over 11,000 other athletes there. I can't imagine a better way to make new friends than in an athletic event during the day and an arts festival in the evenings.
4 ) Show the world we're here. After being in the closet as a swimmer my whole life, I can't wait to stand on the blocks as an out and open athlete. And hopefully, I'll have the chance to be on the blocks at the Medal Ceremonies in Millennium Park. For all of us who had to hide in our sport, this represents a great opportunity to show our pride!
3 ) Closing ceremonies are at Wrigley Field. Cyndi Lauper, ANT, Ari Gold and many others are performing! There haven't been this many lesbians at Wrigley since the call for the extras in 'A League of Their Own.'
2 ) I'll be swimming. I've lost over 25 pounds since I've been in Florida. It's time to put on the bathing suit and show those other women how it's done. Oh, and to show myself I can still rock and roll in the pool!
1 ) Opening ceremonies are at Soldier Field. Megan Mullally is singing the National Anthem, Margaret Cho, Kate Clinton, Avenue Q, Holly Near, Billy Porter, and many others will be rockin' the house. There will be something for everyone. I'll see you there!
I am here in beautiful sunny Sarasota, playing Mrs. Kopecki in Big ( the musical ) through July 16. Go to www.thegoldenapple.com for showtimes if you're in the area.
