Iconic Oak Park store Val's Halla Records will close by Nov. 30, The Chicago Tribune reported. The business has been open for 47 years.
Named after founder Val Camilletti, the original Val's Halla opened on July 26, 1972 at 723-1/2 South Blvd., before moving to its current Harrison Street location in 2006.
Windy City Times reported that Camilletti passed away July 24, 2018, at age 78 of breast cancer. The name paid homage to her now-deceased white German shepherd Halla and the Norse mythology's warrior heaven. She donated to many worthy causes, including the Lyric Opera, Howard Brown Health, several HIV/AIDS organizations, the Make a Wish Foundation and Live to Sing/Sing to Live chorus ( for people impacted by breast cancer ).
Village trustee Deno Andrews executor of Camilletti's estateconfirmed that keeping the store open was not financially feasible. |
