WIU to offer queer-studies minor
Western Illinois University ( WIU, located in Macomb ) will begin offering a minor in queer studies beginning this fall.
Working with the University Committee on Sexual Orientation Gender Identity and Expression ( UCOSOGIE ), Merrill Cole ( WIU English professor and creator of the minor ) and the committee created the 16-hour minor, which was approved by faculty senate and the provost this past spring.
Classes included in the minor are those that already exist within English, sociology, psychology, foreign languages and women's studies. UCOSOGIE faculty members developed two new queer studies classes by as core courses.
Race forum part of Chicago Ideas Week
Chicago Ideas Week will take place Oct. 12-18 in various spots around the week.
One of particular interest is "Race in America," which will take place Tuesday, Oct. 13, 4-5:30 p.m., at Venue SIX10, 610 S. Michigan Ave.
A panel will discuss some of the most pressing issues of racial inequality facing the United States todayand shares the paths they see to a more equal world. Some of the slated speakers include author Tanner Colby ( Some of My Best Friends Are Black ) and civil-rights activist Deray McKesson.
