Out at CHM's 'Standing Up' March 10
Chicago History Museum, 1601 N. Clark St., will host the next program in its Out at CHM series, " Standing Up: From Punch Line to Spotlight," on Thursday, March 10, at 6:30 p.m. ( In addition, a reception with refreshments and appetizers will start at 5:30 p.m. )
While views have progressed, LGBTQ people still serve as the punch line for jokes across the comedic spectrum. Writer Jason Heidemann moderates a panel that includes Andy Eninger, head of the writing program at Second City; comedy club owner Mary Lindsey; and performer, scholar and author E. Patrick Johnson for a discussion on the history and struggle of queerness in Chicago's comedy scene, as well who has been at the forefront of humorous performances and roles.
This program also will showcase the comedic talents of the panelists and gay sketch-comedy troupe GayCo.
Admission is $20 ( $15 for members and students ); visit chicagohistory.org/planavisit/upcomingevents/out-at-chm .
International Women's Day Dance March 12
The LBTQ Giving Council of Chicago Foundation for Women ( CFW ) is hosting the 2nd Annual International Women's Day Dance on Saturday, March 12, 7 p.m.-12 a.m., at the National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts and Culture, 3015 W Division St.
Reviving this Chicago tradition last year, the LBTQ Giving Council successfully brought together folks from across the city to celebrate queer and trans* women, and raise dollars for the LBTQ communities.
The LBTQ Giving Council was the first affinity group in Chicago formed to provide grants to organizations and programs that serve LBTQ communities. Since 2008, the Giving Council has awarded more than $95,000 in grants to 12 organizations and programs including Youth Empowerment Performance Project ( YEPP ), a safe space for queer youth experiencing homelessness to explore their history and address their struggles; and Affinity Community Services, a social-justice organization working on behalf of black LGBTQ communities. The LBTQ Giving Council provides grants through its Lavender Fund.
"We are thrilled to renew the tradition of the International Women's Day Dance! The Dance has become the Giving Council's biggest fundraiser," said Kim Hunt, Giving Council member. "Come party with us and support groups that are doing great work with and on behalf of queer and trans women!" To purchase tickets or become a sponsor see www.cfw.org/events/ .
CFW is a grantmaking organization dedicated to increasing resources and opportunities for women and girls in the greater Chicago area. To support our philanthropy, the Foundation promotes increased investment in women and girls, raises awareness about their issues and potential, and develops them as leaders and philanthropists.
