In life, we choose to have a pet be a part of our lives. This is one of the few opportunities that we get to make someone a part of our family. Most of the time when we seem to be choosing a pet, they really have chosen us. Through the years the owner/pet bond grows. An unconditional love is given from our pet in exchange for allowing them to be a part of out lives. They give without expectation and are always there when times get rough. These pets are not property in an owner's eyes, to them they are family, and at times a true best friend.
Unfortunately, our pets get older and sometimes very sick. All the medicine in the world at times can't save an animal's life or prolong it. When the time comes to put a pet to sleep, it can be one of the most difficult and painful times for an owner.
Our pets are a part of our hearts and because of this it is very hard to say goodbye. Knowing when it's time can be very difficult, that type of decision needs to be made with the help of family, friends and your veterinarian. The most important thing during these times is to think of the pet. People tend to hold on for their own sake and forget about how it truly is affecting their pet. Quality of life is the most important factor. Is your pet able to eat and drink on their own? Can it walk, urinate and defecate without assistance and without pain? I do believe that you should always look at all options of medicine prior to making a decision of putting your pet to sleep. But, if your pet is in pain which cannot be controlled through medicine or acupuncture, humane euthanasia should an option.
Sometimes it can be crueler to keep a pet alive when it is suffering. It may not seem like it at the time, but putting a pet to sleep can be the kindest gift you could give them. Your pet will never leave you, since is has touched a part of your heart. When someone has touched your heart, they are always in your memories. Many veterinary colleges offer grief consultation to help you and your family get through your loss.
Many people have asked when the right time is to get another pet. Only you will know when that time comes. It takes time to open your heart again. A new pet can never replace your pet, but it can help to make you realize that you can give your heart again. If you decide that the pain is too much and that you can never go through that again, that's fine. There are many shelters that need volunteers to brighten up a pet's life.
Regardless of what your decisions are with you and your pet's life, realize that memories live forever in your heart and mind.
