Today, RollingStone.com premiered "Closer," the lead single off their forthcoming Tegan and Sara studio album set for a January 2013 release.

"Sara calls CLOSER my 'let's get it on' track," Tegan explains to Rolling Stone. "And although I do imagine that this would be an okay song to make out to, all I intended was to write something sweet that reminded the listener of a time before sex, complicated relationships, drama and heart break. In short, I was writing about my youth. A time when we got CLOSER by linking arms and walking down our school hallway or talked all night on the telephone about every thought or experience we'd ever had. It wasn't necessarily even about hooking up or admitting your feelings back then. In fact THAT rarely happened. It was the anticipation of something MAYBE happening that was truly exciting and satisfying. We were perpetually getting CLOSER, yet we rarely got physical with one another, if ever. These relationships existed in a state of sexual and physical ambiguity. Is there anything more romantic than that?"

On their new album, Tegan and Sara worked in the studio with Greg Kurstin (The Shins, Lily Allen, Sia), Mike Elizondo (Regina Spektor, Mastodon, Rilo Kiley), and Justin Meldal-Johnsen (Neon Trees, M83, Moving Units). During the new album's creation, Tegan and Sara brought their fans along for the ride by offering an inside look at the process of recording through Tegan and Sara's Carpool Confessional, a weekly video show filmed from the back of their car and featuring a wide variety of guests and collaborators. Additionally, Rolling Stone rolled out weekly behind the scenes photo updates from the studio, all captured by Lindsey Byrnes.

In addition to a handful of headlining shows and a performance at Austin City Limits, Tegan and Sara have some massive tours coming up with the likes of The Black Keys and The Killers. A full list of tour dates is below, including UIC Pavilion in Chicago, on. Dec. 21.
