Symposium to address criminalization of girls, LGBTQ/NIA youth in Cook County

CHICAGO 11/28/17- Gender & Justice is a groundbreaking and timely symposium that will address advocacy and community solutions centering the experiences of justice-involved girls & LGBTQI/GNC youth. It will be the first of its kind in Chicago. The Keynote Speaker is Shakira Washington, Vice President at The National Crittenton Foundation ( TNCF ). Shakira has spent the past twenty years as a community organizer, program developer, and researcher to address social, economic, and political inequities faced by marginalized communities. Event co-hosts She Dreams of Freedom Principal Consulting Group, Demoiselle 2 Femme and Cabrini Green Legal Aid in partnership with Cook County State's Attorney's Office,and Strengthening Chicago's Youth have come together to create a refreshing space for thought leaders and public servants to chart a path towards justice for girls & LGBTQ/GNC youth in Cook County, Illinois and abroad. The event is sponsored by Sista Afya LLC and Women's Justice Initiative.
The Gender & Justice is desperately needed because the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention reports that girls are the fastest growing population in the juvenile justice system.
According to the report Gender Injustice: System Level Juvenile Justice Reform For Girls, Girls of color and girls who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual,transgender, queer and gender non conforming are found to be disproportionately involved in the juvenile justice system ( LGBTQ/GNC ).
The National Crittenton Foundation, reports that the juvenile justice system is incapable of meeting the needs of girls who are especially vulnerable to victimization.
Event Organizers include She Dreams of Freedom Principal Consulting Group, Demoiselle 2 Femme and Cabrini Green Legal Aid in partnership with Cook County State's Attorney's Office and Strengthening Chicago's Youth.
