After protests, controversy and repeated vandalism, a suburban bakery's planned all-ages drag show/brunch has been canceled, ABC 7 Chicago reported.
UpRising Bakery and Cafe owner Corinna Sac has been hosting a variety of events at her bakery in Lake in the Hills, in McHenry County, since she opened.
"This is a family-friendly environment and when we opened I vowed to always make it family-friendly," Sac told NBC Chicago.
In the days following the announcement of "Starry Night Brunch Drag"which was slated to take place Saturday, July 23, during the eveningSac said someone walked in and spit on the cafe's display case, another left a bag of feces outside the door and someone posted a letter on the business that read "pedophiles work here." She even had someone report her to the Department of Children and Family Services.
ABC 7 Chicago stated that, overnight on July 22, glass was broken and words were spray-painted at the bakery.
Windy City Times noted that UpRising's website states that it is "a proud woman & LGBTQ+ owned & operated business."
