Students Deliver Monopoly Money to Abbott

On Jan. 22, members from the Student Global AIDS Campaign ( SGAC ) delivered bags filled with monopoly money to North Chicago-based Abbott Laboratories, according to an organizational news release.
The amount dropped off—$813,699—is equivalent to the amount of money Abbott would currently charge to buy one day's worth of the company's life-saving AIDS medication Kaletra/Aluvia for the 135,000 people in need of treatment in Thailand, the release continued.
Students used the symbolism of Monopoly money to point out that Abbott is using its monopoly on the life-saving drug lopinavir/ritonavir ( sold as Kaletra or Aluvia ) in ways that restrict rather than expand access to this drug to those most in need. Over 6 million people worldwide are in immediate need of AIDS treatment but the vast majority have no access.
Among the things SGAC wants Abbott to do are: establish affordable prices for Kaletra in low- and middle-income countries; offer open and voluntary licenses for the production of generic Kaletra; and to make a pediatric form of new Kaletra available throughout the global south. |
