Chicago Torture Justice Memorials ( CTJM ) commissioned six artists and artist-teams to conceive and develop fully-realized proposals for an ambitious, permanent public artwork to honor named and unnamed torture survivorswith the result being "Still/Here: Torture, Resiliency and the Art of Memorializing," an exhibition that will have one work becoming the Chicago Torture Justice Memorial.
The exhibit will run through Friday, April 26, at Arts Incubator Gallery, 301 E. Garfield Blvd.
Participating artists are Monica Chadha/Nelly Agassi, Juan Chavez, Sonja Henderson, Andres Hernandez, Preston Jackson and Patricia Nguyen/John Lee. The memorial will build awareness of the torture of more than 120 Black men and women from 1972 to 1991 by the Chicago Police Department under the direction of former Police Commander Jon Burge.
There will also be public programming during the exhibition, including "Hear it Directly," weekly conversations with Burge torture survivors in the gallery; artists' talks and exhibition tours; a training on Liberatory Memory work; and workshops on collaborative poster-making and quilt-making.
