Steppenwolf Theatre Company is busy this spring season throwing specialized events such as the current hit production Marie Antoinette's inspiration on fashion during which five local designers worked the runway on April 9 at a rehearsal hall for fans. The following evening, Steppenwolf's Auxiliary Council held a Red or White Ball at Venue One on Randolph Street.
VIP donors were offered an early reception with food provided by La Storia Ristorante and Cantina de la Granjathe latter which will open in the Andersonville area soon. After 9 p.m., the space opened up, with tasting stations such as The Dawson and RA Sushi being among them. DJ Matt ROAN played tunes while guests had opportunities to bid on silent auction such as a trip to Austin and a private wine tasting party. Last year, this annual event raised nearly $60,000 for Steppenwolf's arts education program.
The same evening ( April 10 ), About Face Theatre raised the bar for fun at its annual Wonka Ballthis time inspired by Andy Warhol's legacy. A new location this year ( Moonlight Studios ) featured wigs and Warhol.
A huge open event space sported projection retro videos with performance artists in every corner. Catered by Wolfgang Puck with liquor courtesy of Absolut and Goose Island, guests grooved to music from the past while sipping cocktails and slurping on tomato soup. Supporting restaurants included Hamburger Mary's, Rique's Chicago and mEAT, with snacks from Garrett Popcorn and Do-Rite Donuts. Live-auction items included a three-night stay in Key West. This was the 19th year for Wonka's lively celebrations that support new play developments that cross gender and sexual-identity boundaries.
