Wins Round in Texas
The National Center for Lesbian Rights and attorney Michael Shirk negotiated a settlement on behalf of Merry Stephens, a basketball coach at Bloomburg High School in Texas who alleged that the school was trying to fire her because of her sexual orientation.
According to an NCLR statement, Stephens was harassed by newly promoted superintendent Jerry Hendrick and other school officials starting in August 2003. On Dec. 14, 2004, the school board started proceedings to terminate the coach—with one and a half years left on her contract.
Ride for AIDS
The Ride for AIDS Chicago will take place June 4-5 to raise funds for Better Existence with HIV ( BEHIV ) and Test Positive Aware Network ( TPAN ) .
