A new film by award winning director Tobi Hill-Meyer, Doing it Again: In Depth, focuses on relationship and hookup dynamics among trans women and their partners. One week after launching a kickstarter funding campaign, the project has been getting attention and enthusiastic support from many who feel the project is necessary.
"As a cis [non-trans] woman who loves, dates, fucks, and cares about trans women, I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for this project," says Claire in an online comment, "Almost every single topic addressed in the footage is something that's come up in my own life… I have less than three dollars in the bank right now and I just gave two to your project."
In the media trans women are alternately depicted as hypersexual, deceptive and predatory, or portrayed as desexualized and pathetic. These sexualized stereotypes and the prejudices based on them are used to justify discrimination. They influence everything from public policy, to discussions around trans women's rights, workplace discrimination, access to healthcare, police harassment, and acts of violence and hatred. There is a vacuum of real information about trans women's sexuality. The goal of this project is help fill that vacuum by creating depictions of real humanity, which allow trans women to take control over how their sexuality is portrayed.
Tobi Hill-Meyer's first film, Doing it Ourselves: The Trans Women Porn Project was released in 2010. The film's honest and authentic portrayals of trans women's sexuality earned her a Feminist Porn Award for Emerging Director and led to her being named #3 in Velvet Park Media's annual list of the Top 25 Most Significant Queer Women. This new film project goes even further, taking a documentary approach that will weave extensive interview footage together with explicit sex scenes to create a complex portrait of each participant and the roles that relationships and sexuality play in their lives.
This ambitious project will include two volumes, one focusing on trans women with cis partners and one focusing on trans women with trans partners. Director Tobi Hill-Meyer says, "This project has received an exciting amount of support so far, but we need even more to make this movie become all that it has the potential to be. Additional funds beyond the minimum Kickstarter goal are needed to increase production quality and include a wider breadth of experience within the film." If enough funds are raised with the Kickstarter campaign, a third volume will be created focusing on genderqueer and non-binary experience.
In addition to raising funds, Handbasket Productions is looking for trans women (as well as trans female and trans feminine spectrum non-binary folks) and their partners who would like to be a part of this film. The director is especially looking for straight trans women, trans women with male partners (cis or trans), trans women of color, people of color in general, and people over forty.
