On Wednesday, July 19, U.S. Rep. Lynn Woolsey of California, D-Va., will introduce the Scouting For All Act of 2000 in the U.S. House of Representatives. If enacted, the legislation will revoke the Congressional Charter of the Boy Scouts of America.
Congressional Charters are honorary titles granted by Congress to organizations formed for charitable, patriotic or educational purposes. Such charters have no legal standing.
"This isn't an attack on the Boy Scouts," said Woolsey's Press Secretary Heather Brewer. "However, [ Woolsey ] doesn't think that discrimination against any American is charitable, patriotic, or of sound educational value."
The public is invited to join Congresswoman Woolsey, the bill's co-sponsors, current and former Boy Scouts and representatives of Scouting For All, the Human Rights Campaign, National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays, and NationalGayLobby.Org at a press conference to announce the legislation's introduction.
Members of congress may be contacted by phone through the Capitol switchboard at ( 202 ) 224-3121.
