In Evansville, Indiana, a school board member seemingly dismissed activists' concerns about safety for LGBTQ kids and trans-related suicides, Advocate.com reported.
Members of the Tri-State Alliancea social service and educational organization serving LGBTQ communities in southeastern Illinois, southwestern Indiana and western Kentuckyattended a board meeting of the Evansville-Vanderburgh County School Corporation to ask for greater protections for queer students.
When the activists confronted the school board members, Tri-State Alliance President Wally Paynter can be heard on a video calling Ennis transphobic after Ennis said there was no support on the board for addressing suicide concerns among trans students. In response, the woman the group identified as Ennis made a gesture as if she's playing a violin and said, "Cry me a river."
Windy City Times has contacted Ennis and Board President Karen Ragland for comment; so far, neither has responded.
