The Producers is back and it's the same, only different. The hilarious Mel Brooks musical charts the rise and fall of a rascal Broadway producer and his mild-mannered protégé—kind-of Daddy and Boy but straight—as they produce the world's worst musical. It's an old-fashioned show with a high-kicking chorus, tits 'n ass and Mel Brooks jokes designed to offend everyone but funny. There's even a flamboyant gay stereotype, but it's funny. The only song you'll remember—if you know the original movie—is 'Springtime for Hitler.' Still, The Producers packs a powerful comedy punch, and Theatre at the Center delivers more musical bang-for-bucks than just about any other theater around. Norm Boucher and Michael Mahler star as Max and Leo. Theatre at the Center, 1040 Ridge, Munster, Ind.; 219-836-3255; $36-$40. |
