Lesbian tennis player retires
Amelie Mauresmothe out Frenchwoman who was once the top-ranked female tennis player in the worldhas retired, according to CBSSportsline.com .
Mauresmo, 30, finished this season at No. 21. She became the first player from France, male or female, to reach the No. 1 spot Sept. 13, 2004. In 2006, she won Wimbledon and the Australian Open.
"I don't want to train anymore," Mauresmo said. "I had to make a decision, which became evident in the last few months and weeks. When you grew older, it's more difficult to stay at the top."
Woman prevails in Title IX suit
The National Center for Lesbian Rights ( NCLR ) ; Leslie Levy of Boxer & Gerson, LLP; and Mattheus E. Stephens of Stock Stephens, LLP won a jury trial on behalf of Lorri Sulpizio, the former head coach of the women's basketball team at San Diego Mesa College, a college within the San Diego Community College District, according to a press release.
Filed July 24, 2008, the lawsuit alleged that Mesa officials retaliated against Sulpizio after she repeatedly raised concerns about unequal treatment of female athletes and faculty ( in violation of Title IX ) , and ultimately fired her. The complaint was brought against the San Diego Community College District. The jury found that the district violated federal and state statutes.
The California State Court jury awarded $28,000, the equivalent of one year's salary, in damages.
