Lesbians to Scale Mountain
Los Gatos, Calif.'s, Carol Mellberg, an out lesbian who is a former tennis pro, will climb Mt. Shasta on July 10 in the Breast Cancer Fund's Climb Against the Odds expedition, according to a press release from the organization.
Mt. Shasta, at 14,179 feet tall, is the highest mountain in northern California.
Mellberg was diagnosed with cancer last year. And although her maternal grandmother died of the disease, genetics are not to blame in most cases. More and more evidence connects breast cancer with environmental factors, such as the chemicals people put into their bodies.
In addition to Mellberg, openly gay Becky Fisch of Reno, Nev., will climb. She will climb in memory of her friend Sherry Miller, who died of metastatic breast cancer on May.
