On June 20, Center on Halsted hosted a fundraiser and presentation for SAGE ( Advocacy & Services for LGBT Elders ).
Among other things, SAGE CEO Michael Adams discussed the importance of appreciating elderly LGBT members. Afterward, quotes from a few SAGE members around the country were read. One member named Carol wrote SAGE and said, "My partner of 45 years and I were blatantly discriminated against at a retirement home. It is clear that help is needed."
As the presentation went on, speakers presented information on SAGE training and stressed the fact that it is extremely useful and necessary in order to better relations with LGBT elders.
Later in the evening, state Rep. Greg Harris was honored for his work in the LGBT community as well as his political work. In his acceptance speech, Harris stressed the fact of urging political leaders for better care for seniors. Throughout the night, one quote in particular was said numerous times: "We refuse to be invisible," usually followed by a jab at the Trump administration and what people said was its lack of support for the LGBT community.
