Nominations for the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards were announced Feb. 4.
On the film side, Deadline noted that the late Chadwick Boseman made SAG Awards nomination history by receiving four nominations: for his lead role in Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, his supporting turn in Da 5 Bloods, and two more nods as member of the casts of both those Netflix films.
Boseman was emblematic of the diversity in this year's nominations. (The Globes have been mocked for a lack of diversity with its acting nominees.) Nearly half of the nominees in the four individual acting categories went to people of color, featuring five Black actors (including Boseman) and a showing for the Korean-American film Minari, , which won a Lead Actor nom for Steven Yeun and Supporting Actress for Youn Yuh-Yung.
Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture nominees include Da 5 Bloods, Minari, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, One Night in Miami and The Trial of the Chicago 7. Viola Davis received a lead actress nod for portraying LGBTQ blues singer Ma Raineyand she'll be competing against Frances McDormand (Nomadland) and Carey Mulligan (Promising Young Woman), among others.
On the television side, three series that were shut out of the Golden Globes nominations announced earlier this weekBridgerton, I May Destroy You and Dead to Mereceived nods. Bridgerton's nods are for Drama Series ensemble and Male Actor in a drama series for star Rege-Jean Page; I May Destroy You received a SAG Award nomination for its creator, director and star Michaela Coel, in the Female Actor in a Television Movie or Limited Series category. Dead to Me got three nominations.
The Crown continued to receive plenty of love. In addition to being up for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series, Gillian Anderson, Olivia Colman and Emma Corrin all received nods in the same category (Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama).
On the comedy side, Emmy darling Schitt's Creek (with openly gay actor/writer/creator Dan Levy) will compete against Dead to Me, The Flight Attendant, The Great and Ted Lasso. Levy and his father, Eugene, are both up for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy Series.
The category that could be the toughest is Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Television Movie or Limited Series. Nominees include Cate Blanchett (Mrs. America), Cole, Nicole Kidman (The Undoing), Anya Taylor-Joy (The Queen's Gambit) and Kerry Washington (Little Fires Everywhere).
The ceremony will take place April 4.
