WNBA icon Teresa Weatherspoonwho was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2019is reportedly finalizing a deal to become the Chicago Sky's newest head coach, according to several media outlets.
During her time playing with the New York Liberty and Los Angeles Sparks, Weatherspoon was a two-time Defensive Player of the Year, a five-time All-Star and a four-time WNBA second-team honoree, ESPN noted. She also won the 1988 NCAA championship with Louisiana Tech, where she was head coach from 2009 to 2014; and played for the U.S. Olympic team in 1988 and 1992.
On Sept. 20, the Sky announced that Emre Vatansever would not retain the general manager/head coach roles for the 2024 season.
This season, he led the Sky to its fifth straight playoff appearancethe longest in franchise history. Vatansever took over as interim coach in July, after James Wade left to become an assistant coach for the NBA's Toronto Raptors.
Despite the recent departures of Candace Parker, Courtney Vandersloot, Allie Quigley, Azura Stevens and Emma Meesseman in the offseason, things seem to be turning around for the Sky. The team brought in LGBTQ+ ally and NBA icon Dwyane Wade as a minority owner in July, and re-signed 2021 Finals MVP Kahleah Copper to a two-year extension.
