What can I do about my pet's dry skin and shedding?
During the winter months, pets can share a common problem with us—and that is dry skin.
Though we normally have the dry cracks on our skin, our pets may have actual flakes. These flakes may be seen more often after brushing or just rolling around on the carpet. With the flakes, there may be more hair loss then usual. The reason for the flaking and hair loss can be the dry air.
Normally, air is a bit drier in the winter months than in the spring or summer. Because of the cold weather, heating systems have been working over time. Unfortunately, adding heat means taking away humidity in the air. The decreased humidity will lead to the dry skin.
Fortunately, there are some easy ways to minimize the flakes and the hair loss. One simple way is by correcting the decrease in humidity—this can be done by introducing a humidifier into your home. The humidifier will also help with the static electricity that is created every time you pet your dog or cat. Though brushing seems to cause more skin flakes and hair loss, it does serve a positive purpose. Brushing loosens and brings up the dead skin and hair. By removing that hair and skin, it gives room for healthy skin and new hair follicles to form.
There are many different types of shampoos and conditioners that can aid in the repairing of dry skin. These products can help by moisturizing the skin. Through the dry air, your pet can lose water through their skin. The moisturizers and rinses/sprays hydrate the skin while forming a barrier to keep moisture in the skin. These products can be found at pet stores and veterinary clinics. Remember when bathing your pet, don't forget to put cotton in their ears. If water were to get into the ear, it could lead to an ear infection.
There are numerous oral supplements of essential fatty acids that also help with flaking skin. Essential fatty acids help with skin cell structure and provide a shiny healthy coat. There are many different oils out there such as lanolin, mineral oil, safflower oil, sesame oil and cottonseed oil. Vitamin E is also very beneficial to the skin. You can buy gel caplets or oils such as Derm Caps, which have omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, from your veterinarian, or there are other products at pet stores available. Because some oils may have a fishy scent to them, cats seem to like it.
All of these products can be used throughout the year for dry skin, but it seems that during the winter months is when they are needed most.
