FROM A NEWS RELEASE
The News and Letters Committee hosts a panel discussion on: How Do We Defend Equality?
Monday, Sept. 28, 6:30 p.m. at the News and Letters Library, 228 S. Wabash Ave., Room 230
Chicago.
Prompted by California's anti-gay Proposition 8, passed in November 2008 to ban same-sex marriage, many Queer activists are planning the National Equality March on Oct. 11,the 30th anniversary of the 1st national march on Washington, D.C., for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Rights. The march demands equal protection in all matters governed by civil law in all 50 states.
Discussion: What do we hope to gain by marching on Washington? Should one of our demands be legal marriage between same-sex people? Or is legal marriage an oppressive capitalist institution that should be abolished? What kind of demands will help create the kind of society where everyone experiences freedom?
Speakers include: Darrell Gordon, Queer activist, local organizer for the 1987 National March and National Steering Committee delegate to the 1993 March, Elise Barclay, activist and "Queer Notes" columnist, followed by open discussion.
