Kina Collinsa 30-year-old community organizer and activist as well as a nationally recognized gun-violence prevention advocatehas launched another campaign to challenge longtime U.S. Rep. Danny Davis (D-Chicago) in Illinois' 7th Congressional District in 2022.
In a press release, Collins noted that she has the backing of Justice Democrats, the group that previously aided Marie Newman's victory in her second primary campaign against 15-year incumbent Dan Lipinski.
Collins also stated that the district is home to Chicago's wealthy financial district, giant tech companies and luxury hotelsbut also neighborhoods with unemployment as high as 35% and lead in the drinking water. The district is home to more than a quarter of all gun violence in the state of Illinois, and 20% of the district lives below the poverty line, including nearly 30% of children.
Davis has represented Illinois' 7th Congressional District since 1997. In her release, Collins said of the incumbent, "Despite entering Congress 24 years ago with a progressive history, Rep. Davis' time in Washington changed how he votes and who he fights for. Davis has taken millions from corporate pacs and health care executives over the course of his career, while communities like Austin have been left behind."
Collins previously challenged Davis in the 2020 primary cycle, finishing second in the split, four-way race despite spending the least amount of money of the candidates. |
