The Iraq War drama The Hurt Locker was the big winner at the 82nd Academy Awards March 7, winning six Oscars—including Best Picture, where it bested nine other films.
Kathryn Bigelow, who helmed Hurt Locker, made history as the first woman to be named best director, accepting the award from presenter Barbra Streisand. ( The previous nominees were Lina Wertmüller for Seven Beauties, Jane Campion for The Piano and Sofia Coppola for Lost in Translation, according to the New York Daily News. ) In doing so, she defeated ex-husband James Cameron, who was behind the behemoth Avatar, which has grossed more than $2 billion worldwide. ( Avatar took home three awards, significantly fewer than the 11 Cameron's film Titanic won in 1998. )
Regarding the acting awards, the victors were all first-time winners: Mo'Nique ( Best Supporting Actress for Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire ) , Christoph Waltz ( Best Supporting Actor for Inglourious Basterds ) , Sandra Bullock ( Best Actress for The Blind Side ) and Jeff Bridges ( Best Actor for Crazy Heart ) . During her acceptance speech, Bullock said of co-nominee Meryl Streep, "Meryl, you know what I think of you, and you're such a good kisser!" Bullock, 45, also tearfully paid tribute to her mother, Helga B, saying that Helga taught her " [ t ] here is no race, no religion, no class system, no color, nothing, no sexual orientation that makes us better than anyone else—we're all deserving of love," according to USMagazine.com .
Interestingly, Bullock accepted a Razzie Award for Worst Actress based on her performance in the movie All About Steve, making her the first to win a Razzie and an Oscar in the same weekend, according to abs-cbnnews.com .
Those with LGBT connections who were nominated included Colin Firth, a Best Actor nominee for portraying a gay college professor in A Single Man, and out African-American director Lee Daniels, who helmed Precious.
Out actor Neil Patrick Harris opened the show with a song-and-dance number about duets, setting the stage for Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin, who co-hosted the show. Openly gay director/choreographer Adam Shankman co-produced the event. |
