Norman L. Sandfield will speak on his new book, Awa Tsireh: Pueblo Painter & Metalsmith at the Mitchell Museum of the American Indian on Sunday, Jan. 21, 2018 from 2 to 3 p.m. Admission will be $10 or $8 for members.
Sandfield is an internationally known collector and antique dealer in Chicago and longtime friend of the Mitchell Museum, will discuss his recent book Awa Tsireh: Pueblo Painter & Metalsmith, written with Heard Museum Chief Curator Diana F. Pardue. The book explores Awa Tsireh's paintings and metalwork, both those in museums and those held in private collections. A major exhibition of Awa Tsireh's work, including pieces from Sandfield's own collection, is currently running at the Heard Museum in Phoenix, Arizona, through July 1 heard.org/exhibits/awa-tsireh-pueblo-painter-metalsmith/ .
Awa Tsireh ( 1898-1955 ), of the San Ildefonso Pueblo in New Mexico, won renown in the early to mid-20th century for his paintings and diverse work in silver and copper. He was arguably the most famous Native painter of the first half of the 20th century. While his paintings were sold through patrons and galleries across the United States, he sold most of his metalworks at the famous Garden of the Gods Trading Post in Manitou Springs, Colorado.
Sandfield and Pardue won two awards for this book at the 2017 New Mexico/Arizona Book Awards: Biography New Mexico, and Best Cover.
