Nettelhorst Elementary School, located in the Lakeview area of Chicago, is one of the winners of U.S. Cellular's 2010 Calling All Communities campaign, according to PR Newswire.
Congressman Mike Quigley, D-Ill., and 44th Ward Alderman Tom Tunney were on hand March 5 to deliver the news to a stunned Cindy Wulbert, Nettelhorst's principal.
Nettelhorst is the first Chicago public school to ever win one of the $100,000 prizes that are given to the 10 schools receiving the most community votes.
In an e-mail to Windy City Times, Wulbert added, "Nettelhorst is grateful to U.S. Cellular for the community spirit and support demonstrated by this contest. Choosing to give back to education is an honorable act. U.S. Cellular is an honorable company. I would also like to thank all the parents, staff, and community members that made our quest successful. Many hours were spent talking with friends, relatives and business associates urging them to vote for Nettelhorst.
"... Everyone who listens to the news understands that Illinois schools have been greatly impacted by the financial situation in our state. There are so many needs and these funds will help us at a time of great need. Thank you, U.S. Cellular!"
Nettelhorst has been cited for its commitment to diversity. In 2009, Nettelhorst was the first public school to march in Chicago's Pride Parade, Windy City Times reported. |
