Mautner Project Hosts
Gay American Smoke-Out
The D.C.-area's first Gay American Smoke-Out will be organized by the Mautner Project for Lesbians with Cancer Nov. 12-18. "Smoking kills more LGBT people each year than hate crimes, suicide, and AIDS combined," said Mautner Executive Director Kathleen DeBold. "More lesbians die of lung cancer than breast cancer. Our community needs to recognize the fact that tobacco equals death and treat smoking as we do all threats to our collective well-being."
Officers not responsible
for death by outing
Associated Press reports that a federal jury decided Minersville, Pa., police officers are not responsible for the death of a high school football player who killed himself after officers allegedly threatened to tell his family he was gay.
Jurors cleared three police officers in a civil lawsuit that claimed they caused 18-year-old Marcus Wayman's death in 1997 by threatening to tell his grandfather he was gay, AP said.
Wayman's mother, Madonna Sterling, filed a civil suit, saying the town and the three officers violated Wayman's right to privacy.
Denver trans get rights
Transgendered people were added to Denver's anti-discrimination law by the Denver City Council by an 11-1 vote. The law covers employment, housing and healthcare, reported the Denver Rocky Mountain News.
