The pro-gay Union for Reform Judaism, the largest branch of North American Judaism, voted to oppose Samuel Alito's nomination to the U.S. Supreme Court, Advocate.com reported. More than 2,000 delegates adopted a resolution saying Alito would 'shift the ideological balance of the Supreme Court' on issues such as women's rights, civil rights and the scope of federal power. The New York City-based group represents about 900 synagogues with an estimated membership of 1.5 million.
A push for gay marriage in Maine may be inevitable, but gay advocates say a campaign is still a long way off in the state, according to The Boston Globe. Betsy Smith of Equality Maine, which supports Maine's gay-rights law, said her organization considers marriage equality a 'long-term goal,' perhaps stretching out over five to 10 years. But she has said the issue would not be advanced in the context of the gay-rights vote.
HIV-positive veterans, their healthcare providers, and the general public now have a Web site, www.hiv.va.gov, which is designed as an informational and educational resource on HIV and AIDS, according to a University of California-San Francisco ( UCSF ) news release. The site is the product of collaboration between the Public Health Strategic Health Care Group in the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and the Center for HIV Information at UCSF.
In two lawsuits before the Michigan Court of Appeals, some argue a state amendment that bans same-sex unions also bars employers from offering health insurance to the partners of same-sex couples and their children, according to The Detroit News. Others say the law was only intended to prevent gay and lesbian marriage; they contend that the decision to offer benefits is the choice of employers without interference from the state.
The Arkansas Department of Human Services has announced it will appeal a judge's ruling that the state had improperly barred gay men and lesbians from being foster parents, according to 247Gay.com . The agency filed papers with the Arkansas Court of Appeals to contend a 2004 ruling by Pulaski County Circuit Judge Tim Fox that the state ban on gay foster parents was unconstitutional.
