The California Supreme Court gave the green light June 4 for gay marriages to start taking place June 17. In a 4-3 decision, the state's highest court turned down a request by same-sex marriage opponents to stall same-sex marriages until November, when voters will decide on a ballot measure to ban gay marriage. In May, the California Supreme Court decided to strike down the state's gay marriage ban.
The Virginia Supreme Court ruled in favor of a lesbian mother in a custody case. The state's highest court affirmed a prior appellate court ruling that said Virginia must honor Vermont Supreme Court's order of visitation between lesbian mom Janet Jenkins and her daughter. Jenkins and Lisa Miller entered a civil union in Vermont and had a child. They dissolved their union and figured out custody of their daughter in Vermont's courts. However, Miller filed suit in Virginia, and tried to deny her former partner visitation by citing the state's anti-gay marriage laws.
The blogosphere has been buzzing about a lesbian who was told to stop smooching her date by an usher during the third inning of a Seattle Mariners game. Sirbrina Guerrero, 26, was told to stop kissing her date because it was 'inappropriate' and made another female fan uncomfortable. A spokesperson for the Seattle Mariners said that they are investigating the issue. Guerrero was a contestant on MTV's 'A Shot at Love with Tila Tequila.'
One of the architects of the military's policy that prohibits gays and lesbians from serving openly said it is time to revisit 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell.' Former Georgia senator Sam Nunn, who was involved in its passage, said, 'I think [ when ] 15 years go by on any personnel policy, it's appropriate to take another look at it—see how it's working, ask the hard questions, hear from the military.' Nunn suggested starting with a Pentagon study. |
