WASHINGTON, DC - As the nation's highest court debates the merits of marriage equality, and the constitutionality of DOMA and California's Proposition 8, MoveOn.org members from across the country have been busy urging their Democratic Senators to come out in support of marriage equality and stand with majority of Americans who support the freedom to marry for all Americans.

Last week, Senator Carper from Delaware, Senator Heitkamp from North Dakota, Senator Casey from Pennsylvania, Senator Donnelly from Indiana and Senator Nelson from Florida all publicly came out in support of marriage equality after MoveOn members targeted these Senators with a campaign urging them not to be the last Senator against equality. Today, Senator Tim Johnson of South Dakota became the sixth senator to support marriage equality since April 1st.
In total, more than 25,000 MoveOn members signed petitions targeting the nine Democrats. The campaign generated more than 2,400 calls in 8 states and MoveOn.org members shared one of 11 related Facebook graphics more than 9,000 times, generating over 25,000 likes, and nearly 2 million impressions. On average, the six Senators came out in favor of marriage equality within only seven days of local MoveOn members launching targeted campaigns.
"In the last week, MoveOn members from across the country have shown their commitment to marriage equality for all Americans," said Anna Galland, Executive Director of MoveOn.org . "MoveOn members and other concerned Americans have successfully encouraged six Democratic Senators to support marriage equality, and they will not stop organizing until all Americans are guaranteed the freedom to marry."
MoveOn.org members in Arkansas, West Virginia, and Louisiana are still leading campaigns to urge their senators not to be the last Democrat to come out in support of marriage equality. Only three Democratic senators have yet to support the freedom to marry for all couples.
In Arkansas, over 1,300 people have joined Dee Ann Newell, an Arkansas resident and mother, in urging Senator Mark Pryor to support marriage equality. "My child should be eligible to marry just like your child," said Newell. "Denying people the right to marriage is to fail young people in their civil rights." In West Virginia, more than a thousand residents are joining father Jason Lockart in his petition to Senator Joe Manchin urging the former Governor to support marriage equality. JOIN JASON's CAMPAIGN HERE: http://www.signon.org/sign/joe-manchin-support-marriage/
In Louisiana, Reed Fox and over 1,200 Louisiana residents are urging Senator Mary Landrieu to publicly come out in favor of same-sex marriage. "Don't let Louisiana be the last state to join the marriage equality revolution," said Fox, " People should have the right to love and marry who they want." MoveOn.org members will increase pressure on the remaining three Democratic Senators opposing marriage equality this week. MoveOn Members will next target swing Republican Senators and House Democrats to support marriage equality for all Americans.
