Michael Sam, the first openly gay player to be drafted by the National Football League ( NFL ), has declined to play footballfor now, according to NBC Sports.
Sam, who made his Canadian Football League debut for the Montreal Alouettes recently in a close loss, tweeted that he needs to focus on his mental health. "The last 12 months have been very difficult for me, to the point where I became concerned with my mental health," he posted.
Last year, the NFL's St. Louis Rams drafted him in the seventh round. After the team let him go, Sam briefly worked with the Dallas Cowboys' practice squad.
