The Michigan Supreme Court ruled by a 5-2 decision May 7 that a state ban against same-sex marriage stops governments and universities from offering health benefits to partners of gay workers, according to The Advocate.
The ruling affects health-related policies involving almost 400 couples.
The two dissenting judges, Marilyn Kelly and Michael Cavanagh, stated, in part, that advocates of the ban only wanted to stop same-sex marriage, not deprive gay couples of work-related benefits.
Attorney Jessie Olson, who was one of those involved in filing the challenge the court ruled against, said the decision makes Michigan the worst of the worst of the worst when it comes to civil rights for same-sex couples,' the Detroit Free Press reported.
The administration of Gov. Jennifer Granholm is analyzing the decision. |
