Crystal meth use is most prevalent among Caucasian and Hispanic gay men over the age of 30. Users of the drug are almost three times as likely to be exposed to HIV and other STDs, compared to men who do not use the drug. In addition, addiction to crystal meth may develop more quickly than with other drugs.
With those stunning facts in mind, Lápiz, Leo Burnett's Hispanic integrated marketing agency, and Starcom USA are following up their anti-meth launch at Chicago's North Halsted Market Days Festival with a compelling 30-second TV spot. 'Crystal Breaks' will air on Comcast cable channels such as Bravo, TLC and MTV in Chicago, according to a Lápiz press release.
The spot is the next phase in an integrated awareness campaign spearheaded by the Chicago Crystal Meth Task Force. The campaign is multi-pronged, including print/outdoor advertisements, radio and a Web site ( www.crystalbreaks.org ) .
The commercial, in particular, lures viewers in with its sexy portrayal of a man high on crystal meth—and his eventual demise. At the finale, the man's body combusts and shatters, similar to a mirror breaking into pieces, symbolizing the concept that crystal meth shatters almost every life it touches ( including users as well as their friends and relatives ) .
In other news, Illinois possessed one of the toughest anti-meth laws in the country earlier this year, but state Attorney General Lisa Madigan feels that surrounding states have passed even stronger laws since, according to the Peoria Journal Star.
Madigan plans to ask legislators to pass legislation enabling Illinois to catch up with neighboring states, such as Iowa, Missouri and Indiana.
