On Valentine's Day, six activists were arrested at the marriage-bureau office in Daley Plaza after they insisted on a marriage license for a same-sex couple, according to a press release. The activists, from the pro-LGBTQ groups Join the Impact-Chicago and Video Action League, were responding to a call from GetEQUAL and Marriage Equality USA to raise awareness about federal marriage equality.
Cassandra Avenatti, Lindsey Dietzler, Corrine Mina and Noa Francis Shayden approached the marriage counter and asked for a license for the couple, Judy Heithmar and Danelle Wylder, who was dressed as Lady Justice. "This is about equality," said Wylder, a member of Join the Impact Chicago. "It's about how we as queer couples deserve the same governmental rights and protections afforded to our heterosexual counterparts to legally protect our families." The others took turns reading from the list of 1,138 rights denied to LGBTQ couples by the federal government.
Although Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn signed the civil-unions bill into law recently, the activists wanted to communicate that the move is not enough. In addition, GetEQUAL IL released a statement saying, "Action is taken today to highlight the need for the repeal of the Defense Of Marriage Act, nationwide state marriage rights and action from our former Senator, now-President Barack Obama, to revert back to his previous position that marriage equality is the right thing to offer to our community."
Join the Impact Chicago's Andrea Crain, who accompanied the activists, told Windy City Times that the activists "were all released around midnight. Their court date will be March 17." Photo of the activists before entering the office reprinted with permission from Join the Impact Chicago |
