Out MSNBC host Rachel Maddow, on March 14, revealed President Donald Trump's 2005 tax returns.
"This is the first time any federal tax returns [of Trump's] have been obtained by any news organization since he became a candidate, let alone president," Maddow stated.
The forms indicated that Trump and his wife, Melania, paid more than $38 million in federal income taxes in 2005 ( from earnings of $150 million )mostly under the alternative minimum tax category, which the chief executive has said should be eliminated.
The White House responded, in part, by saying, "You know you are desperate for ratings when you are willing to violate the law to push a story about two pages of tax returns from over a decade ago.
"That being said, Mr. Trump paid $38 million dollars even after taking into account large scale depreciation for construction, on an income of more than $150 million dollars, as well as paying tens of millions of dollars in other taxes such as sales and excise taxes and employment taxes and this illegally published return proves just that."
Late in the election cycle last year, The New York Times published pages from Trump's 1995 returns. Trump has refused calls to share his returns, claiming that an audit prevented him from making them public.
