Statues of presidents George Washington, Abraham Lincoln and William McKinley, as well as the Italian explorer Christopher Columbus, were among the 41 public statues and other commemorative markers that Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot's administration want reviewed further as part of "a racial healing and historical reckoning project" started last summer, The Chicago Tribune reported.
The city launched a website (chicagomonuments.org/monuments&; detailing the controversial monuments flagged by the mayor's commission on monuments.
A few of the other items up for discussion include the Italo Balbo Monument, in Burnham Park; the Jean Baptiste Beaubien Plaque, at the Chicago Cultural Center; the Haymarket Riot Monument / Police Memorial, at the Police Training Center, 1300 W. Jackson Blvd.; and "Bull and Indian Maiden," a statue in Garfield Park.
It remains unclear if the city will bring back the Columbus statues that were removed following a violent clash in Grant Park last summer. |
