Queer culture has always been in the vanguard when it comes to discovering the new and cutting edge. Who could doubt the influence of power gays like Leonardo da Vinci, Alexander the Great, Socrates, Sappho, and Oscar Wilde? After centuries of gays blazing trails, the world finally realizes what we've espoused all along: all are created equal with certain unalienable rights…Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Same-Sex Marriage.
This program highlights music that reflects the struggle for equality around the world. Be among the first to experience the Chicago premiere of Colors: A Celebration, a special 2013 commission by the Atlanta Freedom Bands for the 2013 Lesbian and Gay Band Association Annual Conference. Native Chicagoan Mark Camphouse wrote A Movement for Rosa to honor civil rights hero Rosa Parks. David Maslanka was inspired by the Vietnamese Buddhist pacifist-monk Thich Nhat Hanh and the meditative practice of mindfulness to compose Give Us This Day. He wrote: "Give us this very moment of aware aliveness so that we can build a future in the face of a most dangerous and difficult time." The concert culminates in two works that inspire a sense of victory, transcendent peace, and hope for the future: Mendelssohn's triumphant Wedding March, followed by Frank Ticheli's shimmering work based on the American lyrical poet Sara Teasdale's There Will Be Rest.
Single Tickets: $20. $12 seniors and students. ON SALE OCT. 3.

Each year, hundreds of thousands of spectators gather in Chicago to celebrate the milestones associated with more than 40 years of fighting for LGBT visibility, dignity, and equality. The first Pride marches were held in San Francisco, New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles on the one-year anniversary of the Stonewall riots that began after a police raid on the Stonewall Inn in New York's Greenwich Village.
