Lacrosse—a sport that gets most of its exposure on the high-school and college levels—has arrived in Chicago as a professional sport.
Fitness guru Jake 'Body by Jake' Steinfeld has brought the sport here in the form of the team known as the Chicago Machine. Steinfeld recently told a press conference that lacrosse is all about 'hitting, scoring and speed,' which just might be enough to whet the appetites of some sports fans, according to ChicagoSports.com .
Now in its sixth season, pro lacrosse is the adult version of a sport that has involved about 50 high school teams in this state. At the college level, the Chicago area enjoyed a blip on the national radar when Northwestern University produced the NCAA championship women's team—and another blip when some members wore flip-flops to a celebratory ceremony at the White House.
The Machine, whose regular season will run May 20 to Aug. 12 with its home opener June 3 at Benedictine University in Lisle, is among four expansion teams.
